Error: Sound Recorder cannot record...(due to sound device not installed).
Error:
Sound Recorder cannot record or play back because a sound device is not installed. To install a sound device, click 'Add New Hardware' in Control Panel.
Cause:
The entry, driver=MMSYSTEM.DLL, is missing from the '[boot]' section of SYSTEM.INI, or there is a ';' in front of the entry.
Solution:
The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician. Add the entry, driver=MMSYSTEM.DLL, in the '[boot]' section of System.ini, or remove the ';' from in front of the entry.
NOTE: Following the instructions in the error message does not eliminate the problem.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu
2) Select 'Find' and select 'Files or Folders...'. (The 'Find: All Files' dialog box appears.)
3) Type the following in the 'Named' box:
SYSTEM.INI
4) Make sure the root directory appears in the 'Look-in' drop-down list box.
5) Select the 'Include subfolders' check box.
6) Click 'Find now'.
7) Double-click the file in the results window to open it in 'Notepad'.
8) Locate the [boot] section.
NOTE: The '[boot]' section should be the first section of System.ini.
9) Type the following in the '[boot]' section of SYSTEM.INI:
driver=MMSYSTEM.DLL
10) If the entry already exists but has a semicolon ';' or 'REM' at the beginning, remove the semicolon or 'REM' from in front of the statement: driver=MMSYSTEM.DLL
11) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save' to save the System.ini file.
12) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit' to close 'Notepad'.
13) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
14) Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
15) Select the 'Restart the computer' radio button and click 'Yes' to have the change take effect.
